How We Evangelize the Deaf:
Relational ministry, Bible study, etc.

Description of Ministry:
I plan to begin with the Deaf child I met in an orphanage, pouring into and discipling him. I also hope to begin building relationships with the Deaf to eventually start a Bible study and eventually turn the ministry over to Cambodian Deaf Christians.

"I have always had a heart for the Deaf and have always felt a call to take God’s love into the Nations, only recently has God put these two passions together. In June of 2008, I embarked on an 11 month journey to partner with ministries in 11 different countries. Although there were no Deaf ministries on the list, God brought me to the International Deaf Community again and again. The most significant time was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. While working in an orphanage I met a 10 year old boy who is Deaf. Out of 90 children, he is the only one who can’t hear.

This boy, Sok Leap stole my heart and I began researching Deaf ministries in Cambodia to find a place where He could be exposed to the love of Jesus in his language. Unfortunately there were none to be found. While there are organizations meeting many of the needs of the Deaf community, there are none focused on making the Gospel or the Bible accessible to them. I could not even find a church with services interpreted into Cambodian Sign Language.

Through one boy, God has burdened my heart for the Deaf of an entire country. I will soon be moving to Phnom Penh to work with him and to begin building relationships with other Deaf in order to introduce them to Jesus and His love.

There is a church in Phnom Penh that I have been communicating with, I will be attending there and being part of small groups to form community. I also have been in contact with the orphanage where Sok Leap is, they are happy to have me come work with him and also to teach some Cambodian Sign Language to the other children. When I was there last year I took Cambodian Sign Language classes at the Deaf Development Program and will return there to learn CSL and hopefully build relationships with the Deaf. I also want to look into volunteering at the Deaf school.

I think at first my ministry will be focused on my boy while I learn spoken Khmer and Cambodian Sign Language. Then, I will probably begin with relational ministry, perhaps small group Bible studies and such. My long-term vision is to be able to raise up Deaf Cambodian Christians who can minister to their own people.

Thank you so much for giving me a chance to share my story, I will take as many prayers for myself and my boy as I can get."
